A lovely walk through Bilbao this morning. It’s a very fine city and well worth a visit if you haven’t been.
We got to Portugalete just before lunch and were taken across the River Ria on the oldest working transporter bridge in Europe.
Very surprised but very pleased to find escalators taking people (and pilgrims) up the hilly streets.
After Portugalete we were walking on tarmac most of the route but the roads we were using were purely for walkers and cyclists, so no traffic.
Long day today due to us having to make up the lost miles caused by our shortened day when we came into Bilbao. 20 miles in 24° on mostly hard surfaces is tough going.
Good news is that we managed to get in just our second Albergue tonight, however, it’s now bursting at the seams. I’ve really been caught by surprise by how busy this Camino is.

A lovely spot for a baguette and brie lunch

20 miles in 24 degrees is pushing the pace somewhat. ! Hope you are now back on track, and that the weather continues to improve. Loved the views of Bilbao ; I remember the cow from last year! Did you get a chance to go into the Guggenheim? Hope that you both keep well from now on.

Another big one today but we ahead of ourselves now, so to speak. I went in the Guggenheim with Helen last year so gave it a miss and visited the Basque museum instead this time. I think Barbara is planning to return at a later date to see Bilbao in more detail and will visit the Guggenheim then 🙂
