A short day planned for today but we decided to lengthen it a bit so that tomorrow’s 18 miler comes down a bit. This meant we aimed for a “hostel juvenil” in Derio, with 80 beds, just off the actual Camino route. As we got closer we started asking people for directions but very much doubted the building they were pointing to:
Derio Youth Hostel
However, much to our surprise, this really was the place. It used to be a seminary but it’s now half hotel, quarter business units and quarter hostel. 22 Euros for bed, breakfast and dinner. (I’m not sure how much the hotel is mind)
Today’s route carried on through the lovely countryside until we reached Lezama and from there on it was all road walking. I suspect it will be the same for most of tomorrow as we walk into and through Bilbao. We walked some of the route with an Australian lady, Rosemary. We were thinking she was perhaps Australian, but it wasn’t a very strong accent, however, once she said “I prefer to stop in hotel rooms because I like to fart in my own bathroom” we realised she could be nothing but Australian ๐

Good call on making lighter work for tomorrowโs walk – you both fell on your feet there looking at the hostel! ๐. Hope that wasnโt a photo of your room Derek (sharing with a chicken)! ๐ฑ Twenty two Euros very good value for B&B, breakfast and dinner (maybe you are sharing it with a chicken!). Letzama looks pretty!
In your conversation with Rosemary you didnโt think to ask where she was from? Love that she wanted to fart in her own bathroom! ๐ฑ๐๐
Happy walking for tomorrow! Sue ๐ xx
