Chilly start this morning but it soon warmed up once the sun came out.
Regretfully we didn’t get much chance to see Ribadesella due to arriving a bit late yesterday and our accomodation being on the opposite side of town to the old town. It would have been quite a walk back over a huge bridge in the wrong direction to get there this morning. It’s a shame but not all days allow the luxury of being both a peregrino and a tourist.
It’s noticeable, I think, that as we go along the route, pilgrims are getting better recognised and catered for. Certainly not yet to the extent on the Camino Francis but it does seem to be improving.
Albergues are still a problem though and we’ve lost confidence of being able to just turn up and find a bed so we are are still booking a day or two ahead in small hotels or apartments. Maybe in a day or two we’ll try again because it’s a very different experience if it’s done that way.
The route today was a good mixture of paths, lanes and seasides with a horrible bit of roadside leading into La Isla thrown in for good measure.
As we were coming into Vega de Ribadesella we came across some grand pictures, obviously done by a local artist as most of them were painted on his house
A self portrait ? peering out of the imaginary windowInteresting that the pilgrim should be painted with a dog as very often St James is depicted with a dog of the same type
Our first avocado tree spotted today
Actually I think it’s the first avocado tree either of us have ever seen.
I realise here that I haven’t mentioned that all along the route so far we have been able to pluck ripe figs off the trees as we go past. At first we thought they weren’t ripe as they were still green but it was pointed out to us, by Claire I think, that this type of fig doesn’t turn brown when ripe and any largish ones are perfectly good to eat right now 🙂
Juicy, sticky figs growing in abundance
It’s also been surprising to see a lot more lemon trees than orange trees hereabouts.
On the subject of trees, I caught this bird in one. I’m sure someone reading this will be able to tell you me what it is ?
A few more things spotted on route today:
Along the path towards La IslaWalnuts and Hazelnuts drying on a front patioHorreos are making a re-appearance now we’ve got to Asturia, there were none in the Basque or Cantabria regions
And just to finish off before we go for our meal, here’s a few pictures of our stopping over place for tonight, Colunga
Looking down over the Espana countrysideColunga Town HallSaw this on the local cemetery gates, very touching I thought
It’s a shame you are having to book small hotels/apartments in advance, it would be good to experience the Camino by just turning up and settling into an Albergue with other pilgrims. As you say, it is getting better which is good news.
Yet again, great photos Derek! Especially like the ones of the paintings on the house and the churchyard gate. The view from your stopping over place (Colunga) is beautiful.
Looking forward to another blog and more photos tomorrow. Happy walking! 😊 Sue x
Mmmm! Fresh figs to keep you going! I did notice you haven’t partaken of the fresh lemons yet! 😂
The fresh figs are great, and they probably keep us going in more ways than one 😁. I do wonder what anyone would do with a tree full of lemons though ?? xx
What an amazing day!
