I may have been a bit mean to Santander yesterday, it wasn’t a bad place, it just didn’t do much for me. Walking out of the city this morning there were lots of lovely sandy beaches and it’s got a big long promenade. Strangely there was no sign at all of where the car ferries come in from Portsmouth, perhaps it’s a bit out of town.
The pilgrims Albergue here only has 12 beds so we didn’t even try last night and just booked straight into a standard hostel.
This morning we took the recommended coastal route out of the city and we were soon off the roads and onto the Senda Litoral coastal path. Once again the rock formations and little coves we passed were gorgeous and we also had time today to call in the art centre based at Santander lighthouse. It housed lots of paintings and photographs and had just run an art competition of some sort, featuring, surprisingly enough, lighthouses, and we were very pleased to see some entrants from good old blighty ๐.
This one caught my eye. I thought the artist had exaggerated a little but then saw that it was labelled as a photograph
We also managed to squeeze in a short tour in the official Senda Litoral centre.
I don’t know if it was because we chose the slightly longer coastal route today but we only met one pilgrim all day, the very pleasant Maria from Russia whom we walked with for a short while before she went off for a swim in one of the very inviting bays.
I’m sure you’ve had enough scenic coastal pictures to last you for a lifetime but just incase, here’s a few more
Leaving Santander
Lot’s of rocks to jump about on (if only I had the energy โน๏ธ)

HI Derek, Maria dont be Maria from Moscu? Will be a enourmous coincidence if she are. We share the same dinner table with you and lots of friends in Santiago. Remember? Enjoy the Camino, my friend!

It’s not the same Maria I met today, however, I’ve heard on the Camino grapevine that there are a couple more Russian girls doing the del Norte so I shall keep my eyes peeled ๐

Glad you have managed to do a bit of sight seeing (art centre). They did say that it would quieten down after Bilbao but 1 other pilgrim โ thatโs quiet! Again, lovely photos โ shame one of you didnโt stand next to the 10ft statue โ he looks rather small! ๐
Happy walking! ๐ Sue x
