Day 15 Cudon to Santillana del Mar 8.8ml 726 ft – Total 204.9mls 24461ft

Better start here with a photo of yesterday’s spiders brother.

I snuck up on this one while he was dozy in the morning

We read that today’s walk was through an industrial area, following some feed pipes for the first couple of miles and to be honest we weren’t looking forward to it at all. However, it really wasn’t all that bad

The pipes went on for a couple of km at least and remained hot all the way along the route
Even industrial areas can look quite good in the right setting
And then suddenly, right in the middle, you get a spot of beauty

Yesterday we met Clair from Czechoslovakia (she’s lived in England for nearly 20 years now), we walked with her for an hour or so and she explained that she was planning on just sleeping rough on a patch of grass somewhere, no tent involved. We parted ways as she went to look at a church and stop for lunch and never really expected to see her again. Lo and behold, around 10:00 this morning as we were walking towards Santillana she suddenly walks out of a field right in front of us and we spent the rest of the day together 😁.

Coffee with Clair and Barbara

Santillana is a beautiful, really old, little town, if a little touristy at times.

Well worth visiting and spending a day here, as long as you can avoid the inevitable coach tours.

Because we arrived early we managed to get in the Albergue Convento.

A converted convent that now looks after pilgrims and creates jobs for the under privileged. Nice place and spotlessly clean. A 3 course communal dinner with bread and wine for 8 euros can’t be sniffed at either.

Walking to Comilla tomorrow with its Gaudi building, a rare thing in the North.

  1. I certainly wouldn’t be wanting to sleep rough in a field overnight but it has reminded me of the lady we spoke to infront of the cathedral in Burgos who was struggling to book a second night. She had bought a lightweight hammock to cover herself with if she ever needed to sleep out on a bench for the night. Glad you have not had to resort to that. Santillana looks like an interesting town to wander around and sit and people watch (:-)

PS wordpress still refuses to recognise me, only wants to speak to Derek!

  2. Santillana looks very pretty – I’m with Helen, would be lovely to have a wander and sit and people watch (although you did miss out the coffee and a slice of cake there Helen! 😄).
